Sonlight Experience & 2011-2012 Course of Study

We began this experience, as many Sonlighters do with "box day".  This is a sonlight lingo term which simply refers to the day your box of curriculum arrives and how the kids react and what you all do.  Peppered throughout the Sonlight Catalog are photos of kiddos in boxes and kids absorbed in reading their books.  Since I love books, I greatly anticipated receiving an entire box of books and was not disappointed when the FedEx truck delivered!

We received our box in May 2011, but we wouldn't be using them for "school" till September.  Right away August read a handful of them in the first few days.  I kindly reminded him we would be reading them yet again.  The box was short lived as a "castle" for the boys' animal buddies.  Then it just became bothersome lying around and was recycled.

We ordered Core D (5 day with advanced readers), Instructor's Guide D, Language Arts D and Bible for D.  Since we ordered in April we were able to have a 9 month payment plan.  Which for us was amazing given the cost of Sonlight curriculum.  At this point I hope to purchase Core E next year...but I am not certain on the other portions just yet.  We still have many weeks to go.

August blazes through the readers at a pace that I cannot keep up with.  He does much reading of his own outside of "assigned" reading.  He's read through all of The Chronicles of Narnia twice since August!  Not to mention The Adventure's of Tom Sawyer, The Tales of Alice in Wonderland and others.

Outside of the Sonlight curriculum here are our other pursuits:
Spelling:  McGuffey Speller (you can find online with Project Gutenberg) & info. from the Riggs Institute (also online)
Phonics:  Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, Funnix and Starfall
Arithmetic: Math U See.  First Grade ; finishing up Second Grade then on to Third Grade
Sports:  Cross Country practice twice weekly (totaling four miles) and various races in Autumn and Spring.  Their races are .5 mile, 1 mile or 1.5 miles (depending on race and grade level).
Life Skills: Kitchen Lab, Household Chores, Gardening, American Red Cross books on; Community First Aid, Swimming Strokes and Water Safety.
P.E.:  Swimming Lessons (Summer, Autumn and Spring), riding bikes, park days
Science:  student led subjects/topics from library, field trips, Nature Study, various home experiments

Freebies, discounts and rewards
With my order came a free tote bag that was valued at $19.99 that I confess to at first laughing at.  Then, surprisingly I found myself using that tote bag often.  I used it to pack "school" for road trips, vacations and day trips.  I've used it for library outings and more.  Thanks Sonlight!

As a Core Curriculum purchaser I received a year's worth of 10% off my purchases.  Which I too scoffed at thinking I wouldn't be making any more purchases.  Then, I wanted to buy the Flashmaster.  I did a web search and found that with my Sonlight discount I really would save the most there.  I think I got free shipping too.

This year I am wavering on the second year purchase, and knowing I have a discount waiting as a Core Member is a great deal...
